Poppy Almond Coffee Cake


 

I had a thing for poppy seeds after living in Czechoslovakia for 9 months. This is fancy, delicious and very reminiscent of Prague.

PASTRY
1 ½ t dry baker’s yeast
¼ c warm water
¼ c warm milk
½ t salt
¼ c honey
1 egg
¼ c butter, softened
1 ½ c unbleached flour
1 ½ c whole wheat pastry flour

FILLING
¾ c poppy seeds
¾ c chopped or slivered almonds
¼ c honey
¼ c milk
1 t grated lemon peel
1 T lemon juice
3 T butter
1 T melted butter
2 T slivered or sliced almonds
